CASE #222 (Posted August 26, 2009 Further SOLVED Jan 24 2018) Further Solved (June 30, 2021)

Multiple sources: 1) Hello, I came across the posting from 2009. My name is Rustom Madon, andย Homiย was my father, andย Bettyย was my mother. Are we related?ย RUS MADONย <rus.madon@btinternet.com>
2) Hello Zubs, This is Firdosh Tolat from Mumbai.ย Nusserwanji & Alamai Madonย (of Madon Colony, Bhusaval) were our neighbours in Fort, Bombay. Nusserwanji was very fond of me and used to call me as his GRANDSON. Homi Uncle left India somewhere in 1950s for further studies in London. There he met Betty and they had 2 sons โ€“ Neville and Rustom. Their Navjote was done sometime in the late 1960s. Nusserwanji expired somewhere around in 1970 and that was the first time that Homi Uncle visited India after several years. Thereafter he kept in touch with us for his mother. Alamai expired in mid 1980s. Betty expired in 1990s. After that Homi Uncle married Patricia, who was also recently widowed and a very close friend of Betty & Homi. They visited us in 1999. Homi Uncle expired sometime later. Patricia continues to keep in touch with us. She resides in Harpenden, England, UK. She last visited India in February 2015, with her son David Katan. Behramjiโ€™s wife Aloo used to reside in Canada. She would also have crossed the mortal bridge by now. One of Nusserwanjiโ€™s brothers (donโ€™t know which one) had a daughter Soonu who was married to a Doctor and who stayed opposite the Petit Sanatorium, on August Kranti Marg, Kemps Corner. I think name of the building was White Hall. Soonu expired sometime in the 1990s and we do not have any contacts with the family. You may write to Patricia patriciamadon.pm@gmail.com or David dmkatan@gmail.com Best wishes & warm regards, Tan Darosti & Cheers! Firdosh Khurshed Tolat
Response to 2) Mr. Tolat ,ย your parentsย started living in the 2 nd floor flat where I lived with my parents……when we left, my dadโ€™s cousin Maneck postwala lived there for years and then my parents rented it out to your parents and my uncle still occupied a room even then. It was in the 60s or 70s that your parents came to live there. You were a little child then. Mahabanoo Mody-Kotwal via Facebook

CASE # 665 (Posted June 22, 2021)

Iโ€™ve been looking with great interest at your Parsi Directory online and wonder if you can help me further, as I am looking to trace my ancestors in Bombay and would greatly appreciate any assistance or advice you can offer. My name is Elizabeth Brown (nee Jamsett) and I live in the UK. ย My grandfather,ย Kaikhosru Jamsett, a Parsi, was born in Bombay around 1873 and he qualified as a Doctor in Bombay on or before 1902. In 1908 he was in London studying at the London School of Tropical Medicine, which was founded in 1899 with the help of a donation from Parsi philanthropist Bomanjee Dinshaw Petit. Kaikhosru Jamsett marriedย Ada Woodย in 1911 and lived and practiced in Canning Town, London until his death in 1929. Kaikhosru Jamsettโ€™s father wasย Jamsetji Framji Polshudaย (a frame maker & builder. Deceased by 1911). The family believe that he knew Mahatma Gandhi and that his wife Ada, met with Gandhi when he stayed in Canning Town for 3 months in 1931. I appreciate you are busy but would be most grateful if you could give advice on the best way to trace my ancestors in Bombay or indeed, recommend someone who may be able to help, as I am struggling to find further information from the UK. ย I would of course be willing to pay for the service. I look forward to hearing from you. Yours sincerely, Elizabeth Brown <elizabethbrown9@me.com>. Multiple Sources: 1) Dear Ms.Ganneri, My name is Naval Pandole and I have come across your post in the Missing Parsi cases. My late father ๐๐ก๐ž๐ซ๐จ๐ณ๐ž ๐๐š๐ง๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ž was an avid boxer and a ๐›๐จ๐๐ฒ ๐›๐ฎ๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ก๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐š๐ฌ๐ญ. He had told me that he had won the โ€œBody Beautifulโ€ competition and I have various photographs with me to confirm this fact. He also used to do his work out and training at Tehmurasp Sarkariโ€™s Gym. In fact I also used Mr Sarkariโ€™s Gym at Grant Road in the 1960โ€™s. If I can be of more assistance then please do let me know. My email ID is npandole@gmail.com. Yours faithfully, Naval Pandole <npandole@gmail.com>
2) Dear Dr Namrata, My name is Yazdyar Sam Haveliwala and I am working as Divisional Manager with the Division of Women and Child Health, Aga Khan University, Karachi. I follow The Missing Parsi link and read with interest all the cases, solved and unsolved. Here I came across your request for information on the Sports Culture within our community and remembered that among my fatherโ€™s books there was ๐š ๐›๐จ๐จ๐ค ๐จ๐ง ๐๐š๐ซ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐’๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ฌ, ๐›๐ฒ ๐‡. ๐ƒ. ๐ƒ๐š๐ซ๐ฎ๐ค๐ก๐š๐ง๐š๐ฐ๐š๐ฅ๐š (1935). I have enclosed a scanned copy of its front cover for your information and search for the book in India. Unfortunately the book with me contacted moisture and quite a few of its pages have been glued together. However, I have still retained it and only an expert restorer might be able to separate the pages of this historical book. But I have not been able to find one here. On another note, there exists a ๐‚๐จ๐ฐ๐š๐ฌ๐ฃ๐ž๐ž (unsure if that is the right spelling) ๐๐ก๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ฅ ๐…๐ข๐ญ๐ง๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐‚๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ซ๐ž ๐ข๐ง ๐Š๐š๐ซ๐š๐œ๐ก๐ข and it was built pre-partition. Maybe somewhere there exists some information on this Centre; especially in books written on Karachi (Karachi during the Raj – published by the DAWN Group of Newspapers) or in the book Kurrachee (unsure of this spelling). They might be able to give you information on this fitness club. I hope this information helps and you are able to obtain the mentioned book to help you complete your research work. Thank you. With kind regards, Yazdyar S Haveliwala Divisional Manager Division of Women and Child Health Aga Khan University Karachi, Pakistan <yazdyar.haveliwala@aku.edu>
Response from Namrata: Many many thanks for responding to my request. I have read Darukhanawalaโ€™s book and have been able to take some leads from the information from that book. I am deeply interested in the Physical Culture Institute at Karachi that you mention since it has direct bearing on my project. I will definitely look up books on Karachi for references to the existence of this Institute, would you have any information if the Institute still exists? Many many thanks once again for responding to my request. I will write to you again, Best Regards Namrata

Details about the Missing Parsi were shared by Mr. Cyrus Irani who responded to my post on Zoroastrians.net. I had been directed to Mr Yazdi Tantra by someone who I interviewed for the project. Let me also take a moment to introduce myself. I am working in the History Department of the SNDT College and am working on a project for the K.R. Cama Oriental Institute on Parsi Physical Culture Clubs in Bombay. I am looking at ๐๐š๐ซ๐ฌ๐ข ๐›๐จ๐๐ฒ ๐›๐ฎ๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ, strong men, athletes and wrestlers as well as some of the institutions that they had founded in the early twentieth century. I am particularly interested in the career of 1) ๐“๐ž๐ก๐ฆ๐ฌ๐š๐ฉ ๐’๐š๐ซ๐ค๐š๐ซ๐ข (who also founded a physical culture home which was certainly functional upto 1949) 2) ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐š๐ง๐ฌ๐ก๐š ๐‚๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฃ๐ข ๐†๐š๐ณ๐๐š๐ซ (b. 1876) who founded the Guzder Health Home. [References to both these men are found in Darukhanawala Parsis and Sports]. The only thing I have been able to trace is a picture of Gazdar from Darukhanawala (Parsi Lustre Vol 1). 3) ๐ƒ๐ข๐ง๐ฌ๐ก๐š๐ก ๐Œ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฒ who ran the Mistry Physical Culture Institute in Bandra. I have had some success on Mr. Sarkari but none at all on Gazdar and Mistry. However I havenโ€™t been able to track the exact location of Gazdarโ€™s Health Home or even find any information about these remarkable men despite my scouring of archival material both in Gujarati and in English. Iโ€™m also interested in the history of the Markerโ€™s Health Home and have spoken to some old timers and got some information. I have also had some success with the Petit Gymnastic Institute on which there is much material in the State Archives and newspapers. So broadly I am looking at recovering the histories of Parsi physical culturists and institutions, which have not been documented in detail in the existing community histories. I was hoping if I could receive any help or insight in this regard through your site. Thank you. Best Regards, Namrata.
